Climbing Hydrangea (1 gal pot)

Climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) are hardy, self-clinging vines that thrive in Southern Ontario, adding lush greenery and fragrant white blooms to walls, fences, and trellises. The ideal times to plant climbing hydrangeas are during the cooler months of fall or early spring. This timing allows the plants to establish their root systems before the stress of summer heat or winter cold.

Climbing hydrangea prefer rich, well-drained soil and grow well in partial shade to full sun, with some protection from intense afternoon heat. Water regularly during establishment and keep soil consistently moist. A slow-release fertilizer in late spring will encourage healthy growth. Minimal pruning is needed—just remove dead wood in late winter. Provide sturdy support, as mature vines can become heavy. Patience is key, as they take a few years to bloom, but the stunning display is well worth the wait!
